Message from the Dean
In the Name of Allah SWT, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful.
First and foremost, I would like to give thanks to the management of the University for having put their trust in me to lead the Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA-UUM) commencing January 1, 2017. I humbly accept this responsibility and I am committed to propel the School further, to be amongst the best accounting schools in the world. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the former Dean, Professor Dr Kamil Md Idris for his leadership from year 2011 to 2016.
The School has over 100 qualified academic staff members spreading across five (5) teaching units specifically: Financial Accounting, Accounting Information System, Taxation, Management Accounting and Auditing. This makes TISSA-UUM one of the largest accounting schools in the world.
Currently, the School has two (2) undergraduate programmes, namely the Bachelor of Accounting and the Bachelor of Accounting Information System. The number of active undergraduate students is around 1,300 with more than 75% of them are in the Bachelor of Accounting programme. In addition, we have 290 post graduate students with about 60% of them pursuing the Masters programmes and the rest are still studying at the doctorate level. Aside from that, more than 10% of our students consist of foreigners.
The School’s Centre of Excellence, the Institute for Strategic & Sustainable Accounting Development (ISSAD) has been playing important roles in research and consultancy in the accounting field. Its missions, amongst other things, are to produce practically relevant researches that would address contemporary accounting issues faced by businesses, public organisations, regulatory bodies, and policy-makers. ISSAD also emphasises on research and consultancy in the area of financial reporting, strategic management accounting and corporate sustainability strategies and as well as organises seminars and conferences to showcase our research outcomes to the industry and other stakeholders.
Previous year (2016), ISSAD has successfully held three conferences at national as well as international level, mainly in the accounting related areas to both the private and the public sectors. One of the international conferences was jointly organised with the Asian Academic Accounting Association (FourA).
Besides that, the School also has three (3) Research Units which cater to research in the area of Auditing & Corporate Governance, Taxation and Accounting Information System.
Since its inception in 1984, the School has been in constant contact with the industry. The School organises from time to time the discourse series with its fellows and adjunct professors aiming to improve the professionalism and knowledge of the staff and students.
The School also has made out agreements with the relevant government agencies to market our programmes. For example, the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has been signed with the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB). All of our programmes are recognised by the Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA). In addition, the programmes are periodically reviewed by the experts in the industry and TISSA-UUM has close collaborations with the professional bodies both in Malaysia and abroad. Our programmes are recognised by them and many of our students continue to become active members in the professional bodies.
To strengthen the programmes further, TISSA-UUM is in the process of getting accredited by EFMD Programme Accreditation System (EPAS) which is an international programme accreditation system operated by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) that is based in Brussels, Belgium. Aside from that, our School has also been accredited by a well-known global body - Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) which is based in the Florida, USA. This international recognition has augured well with TISSA-UUM’s efforts to go global. Currently, TISSA-UUM is at 151th placing in the QS world academic ranking in accounting and finance subject category.
The world of business is constantly revolving and as a result, the accounting profession is also continuously changing. At TISSA-UUM, we are committed to providing a very relevant and high quality education which will prepare our students to meet the real-world challenges. TISSA-UUM’s network of more than 13,000 alumni reaches into every industry sector and government departments and they represent enormous resources to the School. In particular, our students will benefit from this vast network, allowing them easier access to information, networking and job opportunities.
